서울 용산구 국립중앙박물관에서 열린 천연염료식물원 견학 행사는 단순한 체험을 넘어, 자연과 예술, 그리고 교육이 교차하는 특별한 무대였다. 한국뉴욕주립대학교(SUNY Korea) 인천시민대학이 주최하고 패션디자인학과 정재만 교수의 지도 아래 진행된 이번 프로그램은, 천연염색의 원료가 되는 다양한 식물을 직접 관찰하며 색의 본질을 탐구하는 시간을 마련했다.

참가자들은 쪽(인디고), 물푸레나무(갈색), 이팝나무(다갈색), 목련(적색), 옻나무(황색), 호장근(적색), 살구나무(홍자색), 지치(보라색) 등 전통적으로 사용되어 온 천연염료 식물을 중심으로 탐방을 이어갔다. 정재만 교수는 “화학염료의 시대를 넘어 자연의 색을 이해하는 것은 천연염색의 본질을 되찾는 일”이라며, “학생과 시민 모두가 자연과 예술의 조화를 경험하길 바란다”고 강조했다.

행사는 국립중앙박물관 매표소 앞에서 집결한 뒤, 식물원 탐방으로 시작됐다. 참가자들은 식물의 생육 환경을 살펴보고, 천연염색의 역사적 배경과 현대적 응용 사례를 배웠다. 특히 한국 전통 염색기법을 현대 패션에 접목하는 실험적 시도가 소개되었는데, 쪽 염색뿐 아니라 화산송이, 보령머드, 숯을 활용한 독창적인 염색 기법도 함께 탐구했다.

한국뉴욕주립대학교 인천시민대학은 지역사회와 함께하는 열린 교육을 목표로, 예술·디자인 분야의 전문지식을 시민들에게 공유하고 있다. 이번 천연염색과정은 환경 친화적 디자인 교육의 일환으로, 패션산업을 탐구하는 의미를 지닌다. 정재만 교수는 “패션은 단순한 미적 표현을 넘어 환경과 인간의 공존을 고민해야 한다”며, “천연염색은 그 철학을 실천하는 가장 아름다운 방법”이라고 말했다.

The tour of the Natural Dye Botanical Garden, held at the National Museum of Korea in Yongsan, Seoul, was more than a simple field trip — it became a unique stage where nature, art, and education intersected. Organized by SUNY Korea (Korean New York State University) Incheon Citizen College and guided by Professor Jae-Man Jung of the Fashion Design Department, the program offered participants the chance to directly observe plants used in traditional dyeing and to explore the essence of color itself.

Participants encountered a wide range of plants historically used in natural dyeing:

Indigo (blue)

Ash tree (brown)

Chinese fringe tree (dark brown)

Magnolia (red)

Lacquer tree (yellow)

Japanese knotweed (red)

Apricot tree (pinkish red)

Lithospermum root (purple)

Professor Jung emphasized, “Beyond the age of chemical dyes, understanding the colors of nature means reclaiming the true essence of natural dyeing. I hope both students and citizens experience the harmony between nature and art.”

The event began with participants gathering at the museum ticket office before embarking on the garden exploration. They observed the growth environments of the plants, studied the historical background of natural dyeing, and learned about its modern applications. Particularly noteworthy were experimental approaches that integrate traditional Korean dyeing techniques into contemporary fashion. Beyond indigo dyeing, creative methods using volcanic ash, Boryeong mud, and charcoal were also introduced.

SUNY Korea Incheon Citizen College aims to share specialized knowledge in art and design with the local community through open education. This natural dyeing program was part of its eco-friendly design education initiative, carrying significance for the exploration of sustainable fashion. Professor Jung remarked, “Fashion is not merely aesthetic expression; it must also consider coexistence between humanity and the environment. Natural dyeing is the most beautiful way to practice that philosophy.”
